Another steam train fix today. Yet again the 9 o'clock from Pickering was a diesel, but we still got the clicketty clack of the rails without the steam and smuts in your eyes. We alighted at Goathland as we had done before, then headed off right instead of left. We knew that the beginning of the path was an up sok climbed philosophically up to the ridge, then down again knowing full well where there is a down there is likely to be a following up. The little cottage in the hold in f the hikes was lovely, but in front of it was a flood pole that indicates the depth of possible flooding. The 6 feet maker was about the same level as the second floor cottage window. Over the ford the 'up' began, straight up with the aid of steps, with some kind person putting a seat half way up. Walking n from there across the side of the hill gave us a good view off the rsil2-6 track and we were lucky enough to see a train whistling by beneath us. We walked down the row a bit to Beck Hole, time for a cuppa at the pub before heading off to Mallyan Spout. Truly we were going up the spout today! Boy was it ever up!!! On the map you can tell much of the steepness by the contour lines of course, but they don't let you know about the never ending steps! That can be more taxing on you legs than walking up a path. However, we made it to where the pout was supposed to be and after clambering in slippery rocks above the water, we could see nothing but more rocks. Other people were fusing the sad dilemma. But urged on by John and seeing a really elderly couple taking the plunge (not literally), we manfully braved the larger rocks to head around the corner to find a very pretty waterfall cascading done the mossy rock face. It was worth the unconventional path. And you guessed it the only way. It was up with more steps!! We decided we had earns lunch an knew there was the Mallyan Spout hotel down the road. Well, it looked a bit posh, and us in our muddied trousers and walking shoes.....however, our money is as good as those who had their BMW and Porsche parked outside, s we went in . We needed up with a delicious lunch in the most lovely surrounding overlooking the moorland and woodland, basking in the warm sunshine. Could have stayed there all day, but needed to catch a train. This time is was a steam engine, taking us up to Grosmont and then to Pickering. Hanging out the window, wind in the hair, smuts in the eyes..... GRAND. Tea at the Fox and Rabbit on the Moors, rounding off a tiring but satisfying day.
